Ruby D’s cutting boards are made of solid surface material commonly used as countertops and walls of tub and shower stalls. It’s a manufactured material made of natural minerals and acrylic resins. It’s non-porous and come in diverse colors and patterns. They’re easy to clean and certified for food contact. They are branded as Corian by DuPont, Staron by Samsung, and HI-MACS by LG.
Because the material is non-porous, unlike your wood or plastic cutting boards, mold, mildew and bacteria won’t grow on it, so you’ll never see those black scratch lines and you never need to bleach the boards or replace them. This also means you can cut all foods, from raw chicken to vegetables, on the same board because they won’t harbor bacteria, maintaining a sanitary surface every time you use it. Additionally, this also makes the boards resistant to odors and staining. Any discolorations on the board can be easily buffed out with sandpaper.
Yes, these boards are susceptible to knife marks, which actually means it’s safer for your knives. Darker color boards tend to make the scratches easier to see than lighter colors. Visually, however, it’s difficult to see the scratches, even after years of use, because the the scratches are very shallow and the board will not discolor from bacteria growth like plastic or wood boards because of its non-porous nature. If you want, you can buff the boards with 180-220 grit sandpaper to make them appear new again. The color/pattern of the board is the same all the way through the board and will not discolor from use or sanding.
Technically, yes, you can, however, it will leave scratch marks on your counters and your girlfriend/ wife/ mom/ grandma/ aunty would not appreciate that.
Yes, these boards are knife-friendly. Cutting on these boards will leave knife marks, but that actually means it’s better for your knives because it’s cutting the board and not damaging the blades. Cutting meats, fruits and vegetables should always be done with a slicing motion. Heavy-handed chopping will wear any knife down, no matter what kind of cutting board you use.
Generally, it’s safe to put the Half Inch boards in the dishwasher. For the Quarter Inch boards, depending on how hot your dishwasher gets, it could cause some warping. Additionally, the plastic bumpers on the bottom of some boards, e.g. single-sided boards, could fall off with the high heat.
You can clean these boards just as you would your other dishes, with a soapy sponge and warm water. It doesn’t require any special care. For extra scrubbing power, you can use an abrasive scouring pad like a ScotchBrite scrubber with regular table salt – a natural cleaning agent. Bleach or any other cleaning chemicals don’t need to be used because these boards are non-porous and don’t need to be sanitized like plastic or wood boards.
Solid surface material can withstand temperatures of up to 212°F without affecting the board. Higher temperatures could “scorch” the surface. This can be restored by buffing the board with 180-220 grit sandpaper.
Yes, in fact, it’s a great way to serve food, especially when using the sushi/sashimi boards. Place the board in your freezer or fridge the night before, and it will stay cold for several hours when you bring it out to serve on. Additionally, bakers love to use these as pastry boards. When chilled, it’s a great alternative to marble and easy to clean.

Hopefully you didn’t drop it on any toes! Dropping the cutting board may break it or damage the floor, depending on how it falls and what it falls on. It could chip your ceramic tile if it falls on the corner. We’ve dropped our own board several times and the corners have chipped off. If this happens, you can take some sanding paper and sand down any sharp edges.
NO, NO, NO!! Hacking on these board with a cleaver is strongly discouraged as it will leave significant gouge marks in a Half Inch board and could crack a Quarter Inch board. We’d recommended sticking with your wooden cutting boards when you need to use a cleaver.
No. What makes Ruby D’s cutting boards so special is that you only need one for all your foods. Because of its non-porous nature, these boards won’t harbor germs to transfer from raw poultry to your vegetables. Just be sure to wash it thoroughly with soap and warm water between uses.

Yes, all the boards are made with solid surface material. They all have the same beneficial properties. The only difference is the thickness of the boards, which come in 1/2″ or 1/4.”
Custom sizes are available for rectangles only. Call us and we can provide a quote.
It’s really a matter of availability. The ½” material is more commonly used. It is readily available locally because they are used for countertops. In comparison, the ¼” material is only used for shower/bathtub walls. Therefore, we often need to special order the ¼” material. This adds to the cost of the board. We can assure you the extra cost is worth it as these boards will last you a lifetime!
